Most of us in the Indianapolis area think of winter as hitting the pause button on all lawn and landscaping projects. The truth is it can be the best time of year to trim back over grown branches and limbs for some deciduous plants in your landscaping. Late winter trimming can prevent insect infestation as well as disease. Start with dead and broken branches.
Keep in mind not all plant species are best pruned in late winter. Some may need pruned after bud break during the growing season to promote flowering and fruiting. A good reference for your particular species timing is www.hort.purdue.edu. Use the extensions drop down tab or use the site search to find your particular tree or shrub.
